How is Diabetes Treated?

While there’s no cure, diabetes can be managed through diet, increased physical activity and blood glucose level monitoring. Sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t enough and medication is necessary. Hackensack Meridian Health offers the latest medications, including those offered through clinical trials. Your endocrinologist will recommend the medication that is most effective for your type of diabetes and your lifestyle needs, which may include:
  • Insulin injection with syringe or pen device
  • Insulin pump
Oral medications that counteract diabetes in different ways.
  • Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors slow the digestion and absorption of some carbohydrates after meals.
  • Biguanides reduce the production of glucose during digestion.
  • Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors lower blood glucose levels.
  • Meglitinides help your body release a quick burst of insulin when you eat.
  • Sulfonylureas stimulate the release of more insulin.
  • Thiazolidinediones (or glitazones) reduce insulin resistance.
