Two big N.J. hospital networks sign merger agreement to span 7 counties

Hackensack University Health Network and Meridian Health have completed a merger agreement that will create a health system that spans seven New Jersey counties, officials announced Tuesday.

The new company, renamed Hackensack Meridian Health, would run 11 hospitals from Bergen County to the Jersey Shore.

There are no plans to close any facilities, and at this stage, no “wholesale layoffs” are anticipated, said John K. Lloyd, chief executive officer of Meridian. As the new company looks at its staffing, however, it might find duplication in some of the non-clinical jobs, he said.

The new company would have about 25,000 employees and nearly 6,000 physicians on staff.
