WAYS AND MEANS TALKS DIGITAL HEALTH: Wednesday’s Ways and Means hearing signaled one thing for health IT watchers: expect the powerful committee to be examining the sector closely in 2017. The chair of the Health subcommittee, Pat Tiberi, told reporters after the hearing that there are several areas the committee could examine — particularly, though not exclusively, with respect to Medicare reimbursement and new technology add-on payments.
“CMS doesn’t believe it has the statutory authority to approve a new technology,” Tiberi said. “They believe the statute is still stuck in the 1980s.” Tibiri indicated that the statute probably does need an update — though it’s unclear precisely what — and that he’s open to doing just that.
