Nearly 100 Specialists at Hackensack Meridian Health Named by Castle Connolly as Top Cancer Doctors

June 15, 2017

Physicians throughout the network received the prestigious 2017 Castle Connolly Medal

Hackensack Meridian Health, the state’s most comprehensive and integrated health care network, announced that 94 physicians including surgeons, oncologists and pain management specialists, were included in Castle Connolly’s 2017- Top Doctors for Cancer, the nation’s leader in helping consumers find the best health care.

Physicians in hospitals throughout the network, which stretches from Bergen to Ocean counties, received the recognition that results from a rigorous review of the doctor’s medical education, training and hospital appointments. Doctors are nominated by their peers and only the best among their specialties are included in the honor.

“More than 51,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in New Jersey this year,” said Andrew Pecora, M.D., president of Physician Enterprise and chief innovations officer at Hackensack Meridian Health. “Hackensack Meridian Health offers innovation, patient-centered care and the most advanced research, including 300 ongoing clinical trials at the John Theurer Cancer Center in Hackensack.”

The network recently partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is forging a standard of care between two renowned institutions based on a single goal: finding more cures for cancer faster and ensuring every patient has access to the highest quality of care. Today, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Hackensack Meridian Health treat one in five New Jersey residents who are diagnosed with cancer.

“Our patients will also benefit from an extraordinary innovation launching this year that brings together IBM Watson for Oncology clinical decision support tool and Cota, a digital classification system developed at Hackensack Meridian Health that tracks patient gender, age, family history and type and stage of cancer,” added Dr. Pecora. “The goal is to help oncologists make evidence-based and outcomes-based clinical decisions for their cancer patients, which could reduce the total cost of care.”
