Hackensack Meridian Health Bayshore Medical Center has expanded its services to include microwave ablation to revolutionize the treatment of oncology patients. Designed to maximize treatment options in non-surgical patients, the NeuWave Medical Intelligent Microwave Ablation System offers a number of benefits including minimally invasive treatments, strong efficacy and low complication rates.
“Microwave ablation is a groundbreaking technology that targets and kills tumors of the liver, kidneys and lungs,” says Peter Doss, M.D., director of Interventional Radiology at Bayshore Medical Center. “Some patients are not candidates for traditional surgical resection, and by utilizing this technology, we are able to combine a minimally invasive treatment with traditional chemotherapy to extend both their lifespan and quality of life.”
The technology is comprised of thin needle-like probes that are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin and into the tumors utilizing image guidance. When activated, the probes cause heating of the targeted tissue until the tissue is effectively killed. The ability to monitor the treatments in real-time using CT scan or ultrasound, allows safe, precise treatment of the abnormal tissue and sparing of the surrounding organs.
“Microwave ablation patients experience a faster, painless recovery,” says Dr. Doss. “That’s critical because a patient may also require chemotherapy or radiation. With this procedure, patients may continue those treatments without interruption, which leads to better outcomes.”
In addition to hepatic, renal and pulmonary malignancies, microwave ablation can be used to treat painful bone metastases, as well as painful benign bony lesions such as osteoid osteomas, all while avoiding the risks of general anesthesia and the operating room. The relatively painless procedures are performed under conscious sedation.
