The view for pediatric patients at Hackensack Meridian Health K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is getting a makeover, thanks to volunteers within the community and team members from Hackensack Meridian Health. A rooftop painting project, which kicked off on October 3, will aim to replace the current view outside pediatric patient rooms. Current views of industrial vents and ductwork will soon be replaced with fun and engaging Jersey Shore themed art.
The community art project is spearheaded by local artist, Lucy Kalian. Lucy has deep rooted connections to K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital through her personal volunteer service and her family’s longtime philanthropic support of the hospital and network as a whole.
“I spend a lot of time at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, visiting the kids at least once or twice a month with my therapy dog, Oliver,” explains Lucy. “Going in and out of the various patient rooms sparked the idea to take the existing and necessary mechanical equipment outside of the children’s windows and turn it into something exciting and unique, something that might brighten their day. Once we got the community on board, I knew it was something that would be a big success.”
Lucy developed stencils and will outline drawings on the ducts, making it easy for others to assist in the creation of the artwork. The Jersey Shore themed design will include a map of the towns along the coastline, and sailing flags that will spell out uplifting phrases for the kids.
“This is such a wonderful project that I truly believe will make a positive impact on the pediatric patients who are cared for at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital,” explains Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, president of Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. “We are beyond grateful to Lucy for leading this project and the many volunteers that are donating their time to make it a reality.”
Several volunteers throughout the community, along with team members from K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and Hackensack Meridian Health are participating in the rooftop art project. They will be assisting with cleaning, priming, and painting. Over the course of a few weeks, the plan is to transform the two largest focal areas into colorful pops of art.
“Mrs. Kalian is the perfect lead for this project,” explains Ann Marie Conte, RN, MSN, CPN, senior manager of patient care for the NICU, PICU, Pediatrics and Pediatric Day Stay Unit at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. “She is a staple in The Children’s Hospital, and so many of our patients and clinical team have gotten to know her and her dog Oliver as they joyfully make their rounds on a regular basis. And, we will never forget her wonderful late father, Kevork, and her mother, Emily, for their generosity through the transformational donation they made in 2005. That gift helped to create K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, the first state-designated children’s hospital in the area.”
