Healthy Mind, Healthy Body?

August 31, 2017

Experts have already made a connection between having poor mental health, such as feeling depressed or anxious, and an increased risk for heart disease. A new study shows there may also be a link between mental health and cancer.

The researchers reviewed 16 studies in Britain that included more than 163,000 people. They found that those who were distressed had higher rates of death from cancer, especially cancers of the colon, pancreas, esophagus and prostate, as well as leukemia.

“This study adds to the growing evidence that mood can play a critical role in disease outcomes,” says Stuti Ahlawat, M.D., of Ocean Medical Center. “If you think you might have depression or anxiety, work with your doctor to find treatment.”
