Sporting clay outing raises money for scholarships

A sporting clay outing held at the Hudson Farm Club on May 16 raised $600,000 for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Scholarship Fund.

The full-day event featured a luncheon and cocktail reception, a live auction and outdoor activities such as sporting clays, fly fishing lessons, archery, shooting lessons conducted by certified instructors and a nature tour conducted by the Audubon Society amidst the 4,200 acres of farmland. The fundraiser drew 110 people.

“This event was a terrific outing, and it will benefit great medical students at a unique school,” said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, chief executive officer, Hackensack Meridian Health. “It’s critical to support promising talent with much-needed assistance.”

“Our School is strengthened by efforts like these,” said Jeffrey Boscamp, M.D., the interim dean of the School, and a professor of pediatrics. “It helps to make sure we can get a diverse pool of applicants to fulfill our vision for the school: to better represent, and minister, to all of the many communities in New Jersey, and beyond.”

“There are so many smart and dedicated young adults out there who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, but who are deterred by the cost of education,” said Robert O’Hara, a member of the School's Board of Governors since its founding, and member of the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees. “It is imperative that anyone who has the capability and desire to become a doctor, is able to do so, regardless of socioeconomic status or background. It was my privilege to be able to host this event in support of them and the future of medicine in our great state.”
