What is Testis Cancer?

Testis cancer, also known as testicular cancer, is a highly treatable form of cancer that can develop in men of any age. The cancer starts within the testicle and can spread to other locations within the body.

When to See a Urologist

Men should be performing a self exam to check for any changes in their testicles or scrotum, the skin in which the testicles are located.

Signs of a testicular tumor:

  • Painless lump or firm part of the testicle
  • Swelling of the scrotum or testicle, with or without pain
  • Feeling of weight in the scrotum
  • Pain or ache in the groin, testicle or scrotum
  • Changes to the male breast tissue, including tenderness

If you have any of these symptoms, do not wait to seek care. Contact a urologist today who can help determine if you have a tumor or another urologic condition.

Diagnosing and Staging Testis Cancer

Your urologist will coordinate with specialists across John Theurer Cancer Center to identify the exact type and stage of your cancer. Tests to diagnose and determine the stage of your testis cancer include:

  • Physical exam
  • Imaging studies such as ultrasound, MRI, PET or CT
  • Blood tests for tumor markers

Treatment for Testis Cancer

You and your care team will discuss a personalized plan designed to deliver the most effective treatment. Your treatment plan may include:

Surgeons remove the testicle and spermatic cord. Used for both early and more advanced testicular tumors. This procedure, which lasts about an hour, is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

The specialists at John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center are among a small group of surgeons in the country who perform this procedure using the latest robotic technology. An RPLND is an advanced procedure to remove the lymph nodes at the back of the abdomen.

This complex surgical procedure once required a large midline incision and lengthy hospital stay. With robotic surgery, the procedure is performed through 5 small incisions (all less than a half inch) and the post-operative pain, hospital stay and recovery time are greatly reduced.
