No one has more experience in New Jersey performing robotic procedures for ureter and renal pelvis cancers. We specialize in ureter cancer treatment that is 100% minimally invasive and preserves your kidney and your quality of life.
What is Ureter Cancer?
Cancer of the ureter occurs in the tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. This rare type of cancer can occur in the lining of the ureter along with renal pelvis cancer, cancer in the lining where urine collects in the kidney.
Who Should See a Ureter Cancer Specialist
Ureter and/or renal pelvis cancer is a rare and complicated disease. You should seek the care of a urologist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Blood in your urine
- Burning and pain during urination
- Urgent, frequent urination
- Crampy pain in your side or lower abdomen
Diagnosing Ureter Cancer
Our urologists will conduct a thorough exam using the latest tools and techniques to diagnose your condition. Your exam may include:
- 3D CT
- Urine analysis
- Digital ureteroscopy – a small, flexible tube used to view the cancer and remove tissue samples for biopsy. This enhanced technology has greatly improved cancer detection.
Surgery for Ureter Cancer
Our surgeons are highly experienced in robotic and minimally invasive surgeries for ureter cancer. Surgery is performed through as few as one small incision using surgical instruments and a sophisticated 3D camera. For noninvasive ureter cancer, we perform segmental ureterectomy to remove the cancer and leave the kidney and ureter in place.
Treating Ureter Cancer
Our urologists collaborate with specialists across John Theurer Cancer Center to preserve the kidney whenever possible by using state-of-the-art treatment methods, including:
- Holmium laser to destroy cancer cells
- Medication such as Mytogel and Gemcitabine installed through a catheter into the kidney, ureter or bladder to treat cancer and prevent recurrence
- Advanced chemotherapy to shrink tumors prior to surgery
Our Research and Clinical Trials
A hallmark of the care we provide is access to a wide range of clinical trials evaluating exciting new treatments, including studies not available elsewhere.
We have a particularly strong program committed to Phase I clinical trials, the earliest phase of assessment of a new therapy in patients. For urologic cancers, we are evaluating particularly novel biological agents as well as immunotherapy options that are changing the field. This offers our patients an opportunity to participate in a clinical trial, bringing the options of tomorrow today. Learn more about clinical trials for urologic cancers.
