Hackensack University Medical Center Among Elite Group of Hospitals to Receive STS 3-Star Awards in Three Categories

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs across the United States and Canada. Hackensack University Medical Center received the top award in three rated areas for its 2019 performance.

The STS has developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of the following three procedures: Coronary Artery Bypass surgery, Aortic Valve Replacement, and Mitral Valve Replacement or Repair among hospitals across the country. Approximately 12 to 15% of hospitals received the “3 star” rating, which denotes the highest category of quality. In the most current analysis of national data covering the period from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019, the performance of Hackensack University Medical Center was found to lie in this highest quality tier in all three procedures listed above, thereby receiving STS 3-star ratings. Hackensack University Medical Center was the only hospital to receive a STS 3-star rating in all three of these procedures in the state of New Jersey.

Participation in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database and public reporting demonstrates a commitment to quality improvement in health care delivery and helps provide patients and their families with meaningful information to help them make informed decisions about health care. The star rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Database participant.
