New Study Helping Researchers Learn How Deadly Superbug Fungus Is Transmitted

Federal health officials are keeping a close eye on a new superbug reported in some New York and New Jersey hospitals and health facilities. The latest superbug to emerge is a fungus called Candida auris. Since 2016, more than 680 cases have been reported in hospitals and long-term health facilities in 12 states. A new study is helping researchers understand how the fungus is transmitted and how to stop it from spreading. Making sure every room in the hospital is safe and clean is a priority for Carol Barsky, M.D.,  the chief quality officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. According to Dr. Barsky,  Hackensack Meridian Health is diligent about sanitizing rooms daily and in between patients, and has not had any Candida auris cases. Hackensack Meridian Health is testing a new UV technology called “Purple Sun,” which disinfects a room in 90 seconds.  (Note:  This was featured on more than 70 affiliates across the country, including WCAX 3 (Burlington, VT), KESQ (Palm Springs, CA), WWL-NO (New Orleans, LA), KTVL (Medford, OR), KGPE-FRES (Fresno, CA), WNEM (Flint, MI), KOSA (Odessa, TX), KDKA-PIT (Pittsburgh, PA), WBOC-16 (Salisbury, MD), KFVS (Paducah, KY), KCCI-DM (Des Moines, IA), WNCT-GRENC (Greenville, NC), WKBT (La Crosse, WI) and KTVN (Reno, NV).)
