Retired Army major who lost sight in Iraq inspires on Veterans Day

OLD BRIDGE – Retired U.S. Army Maj. Scotty Smiley, who lost his eyesight while serving in Iraq. was among the veterans honored Friday at Hackensack Meridian Health’s “Mitchell Vassar Vision Awareness Day.”

Smiley, a motivational speaker and author of “Hope Unseen,” shared his heart-wrenching story with the crowd of more than 200 in hopes of inspiring and encouraging others to never give up in the face of hardship.

“Life is so wonderful to live, but when you get in a slump, it’s very easy to stay there,” he said. “I found a way for myself to get out and survive and overcome even the small and trying obstacles. I want to share that with others. I just want to help people recover from difficult times, and it’s just been a blessing.”
