Psychiatry Residency

A Welcome Message from the Program Director

I am excited to welcome you to the Hackensack Meridian Health General Psychiatric Residency Training Program at Ocean University Medical Center. Our mission is to train the next generation of psychiatric clinicians, professional leaders and clinical researchers. We have a community-focus and are looking to train psychiatrists who are both compassionate and passionate about mental health. Located along the Jersey Shore, 1 hour south from New York and 80 minutes west of Philadelphia, Ocean University Medical Center has been providing psychiatric care to the residents of Ocean County for decades.

Our training program offers the training and didactic experiences to prepare our residents to provide exceptional clinical care, with integrity and an appreciation for evidence–based interventions.

Our ACGME accredited Psychiatric Residency Program will be accepting applications via ERAS . Our Residency program has steadfast and continual support from hospital faculty and administration. The program’s size, 35 residents over a 4 year period, allows our residents to develop hands-on experience and close working relationships with our faculty.

We are proud of our program and continue to work to ensure it is the finest General Psychiatry Training Program in the great state of New Jersey, if not the country.

Program Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at Ocean University Medical Center (OUMC) offers a fully accredited four year Residency Training Program in General (Adult) Psychiatry along with a planned two-year Residency Training Program in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and a planned one year fellowship in Addiction Medicine.

The clinical rotations are located at several primary clinical sites:

  • Ocean University Medical Center (EPS, CL)
  • Ocean University Medical Center Outpatient Location (1610 Route 88)
  • Raritan Bay Medical Center (Inpatient, CL and EPS)

Graduate medical education is based on the principle of progressively increasing levels of responsibility in caring for patients, under the supervision of the faculty. Faculty members closely monitor the progress of each resident in acquiring the skills necessary for advancement to the next level of training. In their evaluation of a resident’s progress, faculty members consider such factors as clinical experience, fund of knowledge, diagnostic abilities, clinical judgment, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and the application of various treatment modalities. Each level of training, or postgraduate year (PGY), is defined by a set of competencies that the resident is expected to master. Upon achieving these standards, residents are afforded greater degrees of independence in patient care, at the discretion of the faculty. At all times, however, faculty remains ultimately responsible for all aspects of patient care.

The six ACGME general competencies as well as the psychiatry-specific competencies are an organizing principle for the training curriculum and assessment. Thus, we have developed goals and objectives that identify educational outcomes for each competence domain, broken down further into knowledge, skills, and attitudes. In addition, each clinical rotation in the General Psychiatry Residency Training program at Ocean University Medical Center has specific educational objectives in the areas of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Each rotation is designed to provide a balanced mixture of clinical service, didactics, and supervision, which enable residents to attain those educational objectives.
