Urogynecologic Conditions We Treat
Our urogynecologists are fellowship-trained specialists who diagnose and treat a full range of conditions affecting the female pelvic organs.
Pelvic floor disorders
Pelvic floor disorders occur when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing them to drop. This can lead to one or more organs, such as the bladder, rectum or uterus, bulging into the vagina. Pelvic floor disorders include:
- Cystocele (bladder prolapse): The bladder drops and protrudes into the front wall of the vagina. Symptoms often include urine leakage when coughing or sneezing, a frequent urge to urinate or a feeling that the bladder isn't completely empty.
- Rectocele: The rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina, which can cause difficult bowel movements or a sense of constipation.
- Uterine prolapse: The uterus descends into the vagina, potentially causing lower back pain or difficulty with bowel movements.
- Enterocele: The small intestine bulges between the uterus and rectum. This may cause a feeling of fullness, pressure or pain in the pelvis.
- Vaginal prolapse: In women who have had a hysterectomy, the top of the vagina can drop into the lower part, sometimes causing pain when sitting or walking.
Bladder Disorders
Bladder control issues can occur as women age, after childbirth or as a result of other health conditions. Our specialists also treat chronic bladder inflammation.
- Urinary incontinence: This is the uncontrollable loss of urine. Types of urinary incontinence include stress incontinence (leaking with coughing or laughing), urge incontinence (a sudden, intense urge), overflow incontinence and total incontinence.
- Interstitial cystitis: Also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome, this is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall that can cause pain and a frequent, urgent need to urinate.
- Other symptoms: We also treat conditions that cause a frequent urge to urinate, an inability to fully empty the bladder and pain in the pelvis, bladder or during intercourse.
