Program Specifics

Mentor

After meeting the program’s preceptors, each resident selects a residency mentor for the year. Throughout the residency, the mentor will:

  • Routinely meet with the resident to provide guidance on residency questions or concerns, career decisions, and general advice.
  • Work with the resident to assure satisfactory completion of residency requirements.
  • Oversee and facilitate the quarterly developmental plan review meetings for the resident.

Academia

The academic affiliation with the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University allows residents to gain exposure to various aspects of academia that may include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching a didactic lecture
  • Co-precepting pharmacy students on rotation
  • Small group instruction in patient counseling, physical assessment, and sterile compounding
  • Manuscript reviews

Community Outreach Programs

A variety of outreach events in diverse settings are available to educate our community such as:

  • Support groups - stroke, cardiac
  • Senior centers - diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia
  • High schools - opioids, health care professions
  • Township fairs/booths - pediatrics, brown bag events

Certifications

Specialized education and training is provided to allow the resident to earn the below certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Teaching & Learning Certificate Program via the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University

Longitudinal Quality Improvement/Research Project

  • Each resident completes an original quality improvement/research project to improve patient care and/or the medication use system.
  • The resident will gain experience in the IRB process and protocol development as well as data collection, data analysis, presentation skills and scientific writing.
  • A research mentor serves to guide the resident and provide clinical expertise and biostatistician support is available.
  • Projects will be presented at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Eastern States Residency Conference and Hackensack Meridian Health's Quality Improvement Day/Research Day.
  • There is opportunity to prepare a manuscript of the final research project for publication.

Service

The service commitment is designed to ensure that the resident gains hospital pharmacy staffing experience and can function as an independent pharmacist.

  • Residents are scheduled for an average of 32 hours per month as a staff pharmacist providing pharmaceutical services.
  • The service component utilizes a unique pharmacy staffing model consisting of 1 weekend per month (8 hours/day x 2 days) and 1 evening weekday shift per week (4 hours/evening) to provide a wide exposure to differing staffing responsibilities and promote resident well being and work-life balance.

Hospital Committees

Residents select interdisciplinary hospital committees to serve as standing members throughout the year. They attend alongside a preceptor and contribute to the meeting discussions, tasks and follow up as needed. Committees include but are not limited to:

  • Graduate Medical Education Committee
  • Resident Wellness Committee
  • Network Medication Management/ Med Safety Committee
  • Quality Improvement & Outcomes
  • Resuscitation Committee
  • Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Committee
  • JSUMC P&T Committee
