Kidney Disorders and Nephrology

Nationally recognized expert care for conditions of the kidneys and urinary tract

The combined pediatric nephrology program at both hospitals earned a national Top 50 ranking in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals Report. Joseph M. Sanzari and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospitals ranked #34 in pediatric nephrology care. Our nationally recognized pediatric nephrology team offers diagnosis and treatment for children with disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract. We work closely with pediatric urology to deliver comprehensive care for a wide range of conditions.

Conditions of the kidneys and urinary tract we treat:

  • Alport syndrome
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Congenital conditions of the kidneys
    • Renal agenesis (missing kidney)
    • Renal hypoplasia (abnormally small kidney)
    • Renal dysplasia (kidney has formed abnormally)
    • Joined kidneys
    • Polycystic or multicystic kidney disease (kidneys with cysts)

    • Vesicoureteral reflux (urine flows back to the kidney as a result of how the ureter is attached to the bladder)
    • Urethral valves (flow of urine is slowed or blocked by extra flaps of tissue in the urethra)
  • Glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys)
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (a condition that affects blood vessels, resulting in destruction of blood platelets, a low red blood cell count and kidney failure)
  • Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (abnormal blood clots form in small blood vessels in the kidneys)
  • Hypertension (approximately 90 percent of hypertension in children is caused by a kidney condition; we offer home blood pressure monitoring through both children’s hospitals)

  • Nephrotic syndrome (passing too much protein in the urine)
  • Polycystic kidney disease

Pediatric nephrology services

Apheresis: We provide the full range of apheresis services (the process of separating the components of blood using a machine), including red blood cell exchange, plasmapheresis, photopheresis and collection of stem cells.

Dialysis: This life-saving treatment is available for children with acute and chronic kidney failure. Our pediatric dialysis unit is child-friendly with Wi-Fi and individual televisions at each station. We use the most advanced technology to remove excess toxins and water from the blood and restore the body’s metabolism. For families that prefer home dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services are offered from infancy upwards.

Kidney biopsy: When a kidney biopsy is needed, our expert pediatric nephrologists and interventional radiologists perform the procedure under ultrasound guidance with the assistance of an anesthesiologist.

Kidney transplant: The nationally recognized transplant program at Hackensack University Medical Center transplants kidneys from either living or deceased donors. We offer the shortest wait time for a deceased donor kidney in New Jersey; wait time is less than 50 percent of the New York average. We are ranked first in the state for one-year kidney survival after transplant. Our transplant program is among the few in the nation that provide kidney transplants for children as young as one year of age. Patients also have the convenient option of attending pre- and post-op appointments at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Urology - Our nephrologists work closely with pediatric urologists to diagnose and treat urologic diseases associated with the kidneys and other organs of the urinary system.
