From Patient Back to Caregiver, with Renewed Purpose

September 03, 2025
Rania, a 46-year-old nurse at Hackensack Meridian Health’s Bayshore Medical Center, knows what it’s like to be on both sides of the stethoscope.
Diagnosed with Alport Syndrome at the young age of 24, Rania has lived with the knowledge that her kidneys would eventually fail. This rare genetic disorder slowly but relentlessly attacked her kidneys, impacting her health and her life.
“For years, I managed my condition,” Rania explains. “But it was always there, in the back of my mind.” As the years passed, Rania’s kidney function continued to decline, eventually reaching the point where she needed a transplant.
“It was a difficult time,” she recalls. “The fatigue was overwhelming, and simple tasks became monumental efforts.” Facing the prospect of dialysis, Rania was placed on the National Organ Transplant list.
What happened next surprised even Rania. Known for its short kidney transplant wait times, HUMC lived up to its reputation. Within just one month, Rania received the call that a matching kidney was available.
A Life-Changing Transplant Surgery
“It felt surreal,” she says, her voice filled with emotion. “I was overjoyed, but also terrified.” The transplant surgery was a success, and Rania’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable.
“It’s like putting on glasses and being able to see,” she describes her renewed health, her eyes sparkling. “The energy I have now is incredible. I feel…normal. Now I know how normal people feel.” This newfound normalcy has given Rania a unique perspective, one that she carries with her back to Bayshore Medical Center.
As a nurse, Rania’s story takes on even greater significance. Her experience as a patient has profoundly impacted her approach to nursing. “Being on the other side, experiencing the vulnerability and fear that comes with illness, has made me a more empathetic and compassionate caregiver,” she reflects. “I understand the small things that make a difference – a kind word, a reassuring touch, a listening ear.”
"Rania is a truly remarkable individual. It was a privilege to care for someone who dedicates their life to caring for others,” says Dr. Goldstein. “Seeing her return to her passion, revitalized and with a renewed perspective, is incredibly rewarding.”
Rania’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative potential of organ donation. It’s also a reminder of the dedication and skill of the medical professionals at Hackensack Meridian Health, who not only provide exceptional care but also foster hope for patients like Rania. As she continues her work as a nurse, Rania carries with her a renewed sense of purpose, driven by her own experience and a deep understanding of the human side of health care.
