K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center has created a new Pediatric Neurology Residency Program — the only program of its kind in New Jersey — designed to train exceptional pediatric neurologists who will contribute to the field and improve health outcomes of all populations. The program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Under the leadership of pediatric neurologists Jan Wollack M.D., Ph.D., and Ariel Sherbany, M.D., Ph.D., the five-year residency program equips residents to enter into clinical practice, pursue subspecialty fellowship training in epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders, neuroimmunology or neurocritical care, or enter into academic medicine through research or teaching. Residents will spend the first two years training in general pediatrics, followed by a year of adult neurology training and two years of child neurology training.

The Pediatric Neurology Residency Program is based at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. Residents also are given the opportunity to care for patients at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, providing them with a wide range of clinical experiences and the opportunity to learn from a range of pediatric neurology subspecialists. Residents will also receive training at the JFK University Medical Center’s Neuroscience Institute which is a member of the Hackensack Meridian Health group of hospitals.

“The Pediatric Neurology Residency Program is an extension of our commitment to children’s health in the communities we serve,” said Harpreet Pall, M.D., MBA, CPE, professor and chair of Pediatrics at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, and chair of Pediatrics at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. “Our goal is to provide an immersive, robust, five-year residency experience that prepares our residents to advance the field of pediatric neurology in their professional career.”

“Our Pediatric Neurology Residency Program complements the already robust residency programs already led by our nationally recognized pediatric experts,” said Judy Aschner, M.D., physician-in-chief, Pediatrics, Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health. “We look forward to the development of a new generation of physicians in this additional specialty.”
