Renowned Pediatric Pulmonologist Joins Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital Team

On September 15, 2025, Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center welcomed board-certified pediatric pulmonologist Alfin G. Vicencio, M.D., as the new chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Vicencio is a distinguished pediatric leader and clinical innovator who previously served as vice chair of Clinical Affairs and Strategy and system chief of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology at Mount Sinai’s Kravis Children’s Hospital.

He is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric interventional bronchoscopy and has pioneered advanced, minimally invasive techniques such as cryotherapy and navigational bronchoscopy to treat complex airway diseases in children. He also established a leading program for treating severe asthma with monoclonal antibodies, turning it into a regional referral center.

Dr. Vicencio’s recent appointment highlights Hackensack University Medical Center’s ongoing dedication to improving patient care by recruiting well-known physicians with extensive clinical and research experience that benefits children and families in New Jersey.

In his new role, Dr. Vicencio will manage all clinical, academic, and operational duties of the Department of Pediatrics at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the two Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health facilities ranked nationally and dedicated to providing exceptional, family-centered care.
