Enhancing International Access to Pediatric Acute Kidney Injury Care

International

In 2025, Guillermo Hidalgo, M.D., FASN, division chief of Pediatric Nephrology at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, to educate and train African pediatric nephrology colleagues in the assessment and management of acute kidney injury (AKI).

As part of an educational program at the International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) Congress 2025, Dr. Hidalgo trained pediatric nephrologists from countries across Africa in a range of techniques, including hemodialysis catheter placement for the management of AKI.

In addition to his international travels, Dr. Hidalgo is now a member of the executive committee, and has been named President-Elect of Saving Young Lives, a collaborative international organization that advocates for the treatment of AKI in low resourced and medically underserved regions worldwide.

Dr. Hidalgo has previously served as a member of the organization’s steering committee and as a physician lecturer and trainer of pediatric kidney specialists treating patients throughout Latin America and in Asia. In 2023, the first “train the trainers” course occurred in Antigua, Guatemala. A second Latin American training workshop occurred in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Additional courses have been offered in Taiwan, India, United Arab Emirates, France, Fiji, Buenos Aires and Thailand.

In 2026, Dr. Hidalgo plans to travel to Bolivia and Brazil to continue to enhance international access to AKI care.
