Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital Will Provide Comprehensive Combined Services in a Single Visit

Nephrology Clinic

Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center this month launched a combined Pediatric Nephrology and Urology Clinic for children from birth through early adulthood (age 21) who have been diagnosed with complex kidney conditions.

The clinic is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including pediatric nephrologists, who treat conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hematuria and acute renal failure, and pediatric urologists, who treat children with bladder control issues, such as hernia, bedwetting, incontinence, kidney stones and urinary obstructions. Pediatric nephrologists and urologists are also part of the multidisciplinary pediatric kidney transplant team at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

The Pediatric Nephrology and Urology Clinic at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital will offer treatments and services, including peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, continuous dialysis (also called CRRT or CVVH), renal biopsy, evaluations and treatments for disorders including nephrotic syndrome, high blood pressure, kidney infections and kidney stones, and kidney transplantation.

The launch of the clinic coincides with the hiring of Richard Schlussel, M.D., director of Pediatric Urology at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. Dr. Schlussel recently performed the first-ever robotic abdomino-scrotal hydrocele repair to be performed at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. The procedure is performed to treat a scrotal hydrocele, which can cause swelling due to fluid in the scrotum.

The Sanzari clinic joins the combined Pediatric Urology and Nephrology Clinic at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. A team of three urologists and one nephrologist provide care in the hospital's kidney stone clinic and offer procedures including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy/nephrolithotripsy.

“Our new Pediatric Nephrology and Urology Clinic at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive and convenient care for children with kidney disease, and their families,” said Judy Aschner, M.D., physician-in-chief, Pediatrics, Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health. “Our goal is to deliver efficient, expert care for our young patients who are affected by complex kidney conditions, as well as access to clinical trials and the latest treatments.”
