JKF Johnson physicians publish Fifth Edition of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review book
JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute experts update, edit and expand critical PM&R board certification prep resource

The Fifth Edition of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review Book, updated and revised by the Editor-in-Chief, Sara Cuccurullo M.D., and Associate Editor Leslie Bagay, M.D., and the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute physicians, provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for physicians preparing for board certification in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).
“The First Edition of the PM&R Board Review Book was published in 2000, to give PM&R residents a useful tool, the first of its kind, to help them prepare for their PM&R Boards. Twenty-five years later we are excited to be publishing the Fifth Edition of this work,” Dr. Cuccurullo said. The latest edition includes more than 100 additional pages capturing the latest developments and protocols in the specialty.
The editors carefully reviewed and updated every chapter to reflect current standards of care and recent advances in the field. The content is organized in an easy-to-follow outline format that mirrors the structure of the Self-Assessment Examination for Residents (SAE-R) used by PM&R training programs across the country. “Board Pearls” identify key clinical takeaways, while more than 500 detailed illustrations reinforce core concepts.
New in the Fifth Edition are expanded updates to epidemiology, diagnostic testing and treatment planning and revisions aligned with the latest Maintenance of Certification requirements. In addition, ultrasound, interventional pain management and rheumatology topics were expanded. Also, prosthetics and orthotics and wheelchair sections were updated with the latest technologies, and concussion guidelines were updated. Each section highlights high-yield information reflecting how rehabilitation physicians practice today.
The Board Review has long served as a trusted guide for residents, fellows and practicing physiatrists. Recognized for its clarity and consistency, the text distills essential knowledge across all major PM&R topics, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal medicine, spinal cord injury, pain management, prosthetics and orthotics, electrodiagnostic medicine, and pediatric rehabilitation.
Designed to serve both as a study tool for board preparation and as a practical reference for everyday clinical decision-making, its concise, well-organized approach makes it equally valuable to those entering the field and to experienced clinicians seeking a reliable refresher on core topics.
