New embolization technique helps keep 'baby dreams' alive

MaryBeth Stancato, of New Milford, always knew she wanted several children. At the age of 37 and the mother of three children, MaryBeth and her husband wanted a fourth child. But, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to have another baby. Doctors found a fibroid on her cervix and it was suggested that hormones be used to try to shrink it or undergo a total hysterectomy. MaryBeth was referred to John DeMeritt, M.D., interventional radiology and attending physician at Hackensack University Medical Center, who is an expert in vascular embolization closing off blood vessels that feed tumors. In the past, uterine embolization hasn't worked on cervical fibroids, so DeMeritt and his team devised a new approach. They inserted a catheter in MaryBeth’s leg, and then worked to deliver tiny particles as close as possible to the fibroid.
