March 25, 2019

Denise Aloisio, M.D.,a developmental behavioral pediatrician who specializes in childhood autism at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, says traveling with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder may be more challenging, but it is worthwhile to recharge, spend time as a family and build memories together. Dr. Aloisio recommends calling places in advance and speaking with guest services to see what can be done to help a child with autism or other challenges. Families can also bring a bag filled with toys, snacks and other “favorites” to help occupy children while traveling. Also, include children in planning prior to leaving, such as showing them maps of the hotels, parks, rides, etc. This advance preparation can be helpful for the child. (Also ran inDesert Sun, Naples Daily News, Daily Journal)
