Health system launches outpatient Reiki program, cites growing patient demand for self-care services

Hackensack Meridian Health announced today that its has launched an outpatient Reiki program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, citing increasing patient demand for self-care services. Reiki is a safe and effective healing practice that balances mind, body and spirit, and has proved to be especially useful for patients by aiding relaxation, stress management and pain control.

Program hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday at Jersey Shore University Medical Center's Hope Tower, beginning this Thursday, November 5, and are led by Marissa Winters, MA, RDN, a certified Reiki master and integrative nutritionist who partners with her patients in reaching their health goals.

"Reiki is an energetic healing modality that activates the natural healing process to help restore physical and emotional well-being," said Kelly Briggs, MBA, RN, network director of integrative health and medicine. "Research suggests that Reiki may be an effective therapy to reduce symptoms of pain and anxiety. In addition, Reiki promotes a sense of calm, grounding, and deep relaxation."

Reiki may serve as a support for caregivers, provides comfort prior to surgery, enhances the healing process and boosts the immune system. Other potential benefits of Reiki include enhanced sleep quality and mental clarity.

For anyone unfamiliar with Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key), it is a simple, effective Japanese spiritual healing practice that brings the body into balance and promotes the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki is facilitated by using light touch on a fully clothed recipient. There is no manipulation. Reiki treatments combine easily with any medical condition or treatment.

During a session the practitioner gently places her hands on the subject's head, neck, shoulders, abdomen, arms and legs. If preferred, hands can be held above the body. The recipient often feels warmth and a gentle pulsing from the practitioner's hands. Most find treatment soothing and peaceful.

Deep relaxation encourages healing. For someone who is anxious about an upcoming surgery or medical procedure, Reiki may help them feel relaxed or, if they are experiencing pain, more comfortable.

"One can also imagine the benefits of Reiki during the COVID-19 pandemic," said Winters, the Reiki master. "Anxieties for patients, their family members, and caregivers are high. Reiki can be used as a tool to promote a calmer environment in general, enabling us to better cope during this difficult time."

Cost is $75 for one hour and $45 for a half hour. Patients must be 18 or older. Insurance coverage is not accepted. Please call 732-263-7999 to learn more or to schedule an appointment.
