Hackensack University Medical Center 'Tops Off' New Helena Theurer Pavilion
January 12, 2021
On January 11, 2021, Hackensack University Medical Center “topped off” its new Helena Theurer Pavilion by adding the building’s final beam — marking an important milestone in the facility’s construction, which began in September 2019 and is the largest health care expansion project in New Jersey’s history.
“This extraordinary project will help us continue to deliver the most advanced high-quality, compassionate care for the communities we are privileged to serve,” said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, chief executive officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. “The Helena Theurer Pavilion is shining example of our commitment to continue to elevate care delivery for our patients.”
The impressive nine-story, 530,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will include 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms; a 50-bed Intensive Care Unit; and 150 medical/surgical private patient rooms, including a 50-bed Orthopedic Institute.”
“The Helena Theurer Pavilion will transform the Hackensack University Medical Center campus into one of the most prominent healthcare facilities in the nation, providing an enhanced patient experience while preserving the privacy and dignity of our patients and their families,” said Mark D. Sparta, FACHE, president and chief hospital executive, Hackensack University Medical Center. “We’ve looked into the future to ensure that this campus can address the healthcare needs of the region for generations to come.”
According to Donald Ferrell, Regional Facilities vice president, Northern Region, Hackensack Meridian Health, this is a celebratory moment for the project team, the construction workers, Hackensack University Medical Center team members, and the community. “This milestone means that we are one step closer to the facility’s completion,” said Mr. Ferrell.
Despite the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the construction of the pavilion — one of the largest and most comprehensive health care construction projects in the U.S. — has proceeded smoothly, safely and on schedule. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022 with the goal of providing the community with a state-of-the-art facility to go along with the state-of-the-art care Hackensack University Medical Center already provides.
The pavilion was named in honor of the generous philanthropy of Helena Theurer, a longtime benefactor and friend of Hackensack University Medical Center. Mrs. Theurer has donated $35 million to advance cancer research and transform patient care at Hackensack University Medical Center’s John Theurer Cancer Center, named in tribute to her late husband.
