JFK University Medical Center a Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center
October 04, 2021
The newly renamed Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Center has a big goal: administer thrombolytics, drugs that help break up or dissolve blood clots, to every stroke patient who is a candidate within 30 minutes of arrival to the emergency department. The center’s willingness to take on such ambitious targets and continually evaluate its processes for quality helped earn JFK University Medical Center status as the New York Metropolitan area's first Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center.
The stroke team has been at the forefront of delivering best and timely medication administration that can prevent long-term disability or death. It also has the best survival ratings for stroke patients in the tri-state area. In addition to Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center status, JFK University Medical Center is an American Heart Association “Get With the Guidelines” Gold Plus Performance Award Winner in stroke care. It also received the Stroke Care Excellence Award and was named a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke by Healthgrades in 2021.
The JFK University Medical Center Stroke and Neurovascular Center (SNC) has been a participant in almost all major international stroke trials. The medical center is currently part of ongoing TIMELESS trial that is looking into administering clot-busting medications within 24 hours of stroke onset. This latest advanced treatment option may help to expand the traditional three-hour window that is usually considered to be the period where the most stroke patients can be treated acutely to reverse the effects of an ischemic stroke.
The JFK University Medical Center Stroke and Neurovascular Center was a key participant in the multi-center, international DAWN™ trial (May 2017) that delivered compelling evidence that more patients suffering from ischemic stroke may benefit from endovascular treatment, showing clot removal up to 24 hours after stroke leads to significantly reduced disability for properly selected patients.
