Hackensack University Medical Center Maternal-Fetal Medicine Expert Honored by Hackensack Regional Chamber of Commerce

Hackensack University Medical Center maternal-fetal medicine physician Abdulla Al-Khan, M.D., FACS, FACOG, has received the 2022 Distinguished Citizen of the Year award from the Hackensack Regional Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Al-Khan is the vice chairman and division director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he also serves as the director of the Center for Abnormal Placentation and the Fetal Care Center.
Dr. Al-Khan, who was honored during the Chamber’s fall gala last month, has lectured extensively in all areas of perinatal medicine, including general obstetrics and gynecology, both nationally and internationally. He is recognized as an expert in high-risk pregnancy, caring for patients with the most complex medical and surgical conditions. In 2022, Dr. Al-Khan spoke to the Black Maternal Health Caucus of the U.S. Congress, discussing how advancing technology in electronic medical records could improve obstetrical outcomes.
In September 2015, Dr. Al-Khan’s research department was the recipient of a $3.3 million National Institute of Health (NIH) grant, as well as other grants totaling more than $4.8 million. He was the first physician in the world to perform a robotic transabdominal cerclage on a pregnant patient. He received national and international recognition for delivering the oldest pregnant patient in the United States. Dr. Al-Khan has also been featured on multiple media channels including CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, Good Morning America, NBC, The Today Show and many others discussing a variety of topics.
In 2008, Dr. Al-Khan established The Center for Abnormal Placentation (CAP) at Hackensack University Medical Center. The multidisciplinary center is the first in the United States and the world to coordinate the care of patients who present with placenta accreta spectrum disorders, a major cause of obstetric hemorrhage and maternal mortality. Translational research complements the expert medical care the program delivers.
About Dr. Al-Khan
Dr. Al-Khan is double board-certified in maternal and fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. He is a professor at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and holds academic appointments at Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School and St. George’s University School of Medicine.
Upon completion of his internship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Seton Hall University, Dr. Al-Khan was in academic faculty practice for two years and then proceeded to a three-year fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School.
Dr. Al-Khan is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a fellow of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
