Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center Recognized as a National Leader in Diabetes Care
March 21, 2024
Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center has been named a Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes. This first-of-its-kind designation, bestowed by The Leapfrog Group in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), recognizes hospitals that meet the most rigorous standards for delivering safe, high-quality care to patients with diabetes. Among this elite group, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) stands out as one of just 17 hospitals across the U.S. and one of only three in New Jersey to achieve this distinction in 2024.
JSUMC’s multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care for the full range of endocrine and metabolic conditions, including diagnosis, treatment, education, and support for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, transplant-related diabetes, and diabetes-related to other illnesses.
“Our team members are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, including comprehensive care for patients with diabetes staying at the medical center to receive treatment for other conditions, as well as those who are receiving treatment for the disease itself,” said Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, president and chief hospital executive, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC).
The 2024 Recognized Leaders in Caring for People Living with Diabetes were assessed based on a comprehensive range of key indicators that demonstrate the highest level of staff training to care for patients who have diabetes, including:
- Evaluating policies and protocols that support patient-centered care
- Adherence to evidence-based guidelines in preparing patients for surgery as well as managing all diabetic patients in the hospital
- Implementation of robust planning for high-risk diabetes patients from the day of admission to discharge and facilitating a seamless transition from hospital to home
Robert Gabbay, M.D., chief scientific and medical officer at the ADA, emphasized the importance of this recognition. "There is an immense need to ensure hospitals provide safe, patient-centered care for all people who live with diabetes,” he said. “Hospitals recognized through this program are leading the way."
“Nearly ten percent of adult New Jerseyans have diabetes, and it is one of the leading causes of death in New Jersey,” said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, regional president, Southern Market, Hackensack Meridian Health. “Given the disease’s prevalence, I’m proud that Jersey Shore’s teams have been recognized as a national leader in caring for those with diabetes.”
“Eight million people living with diabetes are hospitalized each year in the United States, and a disturbing number of them experience safety breakdowns due to preventable medical errors,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This program is a powerful tool to promote facilities that can appropriately accommodate and safely manage care for these at-risk patients.”
