Need Care Again? Know Where to Go
It can be confusing to know where to turn when you need medical help. Here’s a quick guide for future reference.
Go to the emergency department immediately if you experience:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- Mental health emergencies or suicidal feelings
- Stroke symptoms that come on suddenly:
- Confusion
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg
- Sudden vision loss or blurred vision
Urgent care facilities are for medical situations that aren’t life-threatening but that need to be addressed right away. These facilities typically have shorter wait times and lower costs than emergency departments.
Typically, you should choose urgent care instead of the Emergency Department for:
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Cuts that may need stitches
- Ear infections
- Fever (below 105 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Immunizations
- Potential fractures or broken bones
- Rashes and skin irritations
- Sprains and strains
