Treatment for Knee Pain and Knee Replacement Surgery in New Jersey
What is Knee Replacement Surgery?
There are two types of knee replacement surgeries: partial knee replacement and total knee replacement surgery.
Partial Knee Replacement
Partial knee replacement surgery only replaces one of three compartments, or zones, of the knee when the other two are not as arthritic, thus preserving a lot of native anatomy. Total knee replacement surgery replaces the entire knee joint with a prosthetic, offering a more extensive solution when damage is widespread.
Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement surgery, also called knee arthroplasty, is surgery to treat knee pain and knee arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis and other knee joint problems.
During this joint replacement surgery, your orthopedic surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage and uses metal and plastic implants to resurface your knee joint. Total knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgical procedures for treating chronic and debilitating knee pain that hasn’t responded to other therapies.
Understanding the Knee Joint
The knee joint consists of several bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The joint connects the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap). Its stability relies on four ligaments:
- Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
- Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
- Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)
- Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)
Cushioning and shock absorption are provided by the meniscus, a cartilage pad located between the femur and tibia, which also aids in distributing weight and improving joint congruency. The quadricep and hamstring muscles, located in the thigh, cross the knee joint and are essential for movement and stability.

Robotic Surgery for Total Knee Replacement
Developed by international teams of engineers and surgeons, including three from Hackensack Meridian Health, robotic-assisted approaches offer several benefits over traditional total knee replacement:
- Cuts in the bones are more precise, allowing the surgeon to place the implant components in just the right position.
- Uses X-rays or CT scans to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee to ensure the most precise implant fit.
- The robot can be used to achieve exact implant placement and proper size to every patient’s personal anatomy and the hope is this will decrease revision surgery rates.
We were also one of four health systems in the country to participate in a clinical trial for robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery to treat severe osteoarthritis. This FDA-approved system uses 3D CT scans to select the ideal implant and define the optimal implant placement and alignment based on your unique anatomy.
