E-Book by Hackensack University Medical Center Heart and Vascular Hospital Physicians Published by the Society of Critical Care Medicine

An e-book written and edited by physicians from the Heart and Vascular Hospital at Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center has been accepted for publication by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The e-book, which is entitled: ”Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices in the Intensive Care Unit: Post Implant Care and Management” has been published on the society’s website since February 19.

Joseph E. Parrillo, MD, chair of the Heart and Vascular Hospital at Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center and chair of the Department of Cardiology at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, served as co-editor for the book.

Chapter 5 of the e-book, entitled “Percutaneous Ventricular Assist Device Console Management,” was written by Heart Failure cardiologist, Kanika Mody MD, entitled “ECMO: Configurations and Management,” and co-authored by critical care physician Samantha K. Brenner, MD; Dr. Parrillo; Mark Anderson, MD, interim chair, Department of Cardiac Surgery; and critical care physician and medical director, Cardiac Surgery ICU, Eugene Bunnell, MD.

“Mechanical circulatory support devices, such as the Impella and ECMO, are commonly placed by interventional cardiologists or cardiac surgeons and then managed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) by intensive care physicians,” said Dr. Parrillo. “This e-book written for the ICU physician managing the ICU patient.”
