Program Overview

At Hackensack Meridian Health Ocean University Medical Center, we are committed to training family medicine physicians of the future. Our innovative residency model integrates residents in well-established, community-based outpatient family medicine practices as well as hospital-based inpatient care. This allows new physicians to be prepared for success upon graduation.

Ocean University Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency is a three-year 8-8-8 ACGME Accredited Program with Osteopathic Recognition. Our hospital is centrally located between Monmouth and Ocean counties at the beautiful Jersey Shore. The area is close driving distance to New York City and the surrounding boroughs, including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Ocean University Medical Center is a 319-bed advanced care hospital that houses a 40-bed acute care rehabilitation facility. Our teaching sites are located a short distance from the hospital.

Ocean University Medical Center’s full service acute care rehabilitation and nursing home, Shore Rehab, is located on the hospital campus. Our residents care for the elder population in these type of facilities as well as our practice sites and hospital.

Our program is uniquely structured, positioning residents at three different family medicine practices. One of the family medicine practices is involved in the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative, a Medicare demonstration project focusing on providing primary care in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner. Our sites are also Patient-Centered Medical Homes. Residents have the opportunity to gain experience in outpatient procedures, such as joint injections and minor surgical procedures as well as dermatological procedures, women’s health and osteopathic manipulative medicine. Each center offers slightly different approaches to family medicine, allowing residents to tailor their education to their individual desires. These practice sites function as individual private practices. Residents embedded in these practices will build their patient panels and learn under the tutelage of the core faculty at those sites.

Residents assume progressive responsibility for patient care as they progress through the training program. During their time in the program, they will learn to practice the full scope of family medicine. Having these private practices nearby enhances their education and exposure to all populations. We are a progressive program with a unique structure that gives residents a dynamic experience in family medicine.
