Educational Goals

Humanistic Care and Professional Responsibility The overall goal of the program is to educate residents in the specialty of family medicine incorporating the principles of humanistic care and professional responsibility. This program provides:

Excellence In Education (Medical Knowledge):

  • Train knowledgeable and technically skilled family physicians fully prepared to deliver exemplary clinical practice
  • Provide a comprehensive curriculum pertinent to patients of all ages and cultures using an evidence-based approach and emphasizing the bio-psychosocial model
  • Promote curiosity and provide an environment that encourages scholarship and research
  • Recruit skilled faculty dedicated to patient care, teaching, scholarship, research and intellectual curiosity who will provide the infrastructure for the resident learning experience
  • Recruit residents who are self-motivated, responsive to guidance, willing to invest the time and effort to expand their fund of knowledge, and fully dedicated to patient care and career-long education
  • Promote and support faculty development

Quality Clinical Care (Patient Care)

  • Promote continuous, caring, compassionate, collaborative and competent care for the entire family
  • Develop mastery of medical decision-making and critical thinking skills and judgment relevant to the comprehensive, efficient management of complex medical conditions
  • Provide quality care in the inpatient, ambulatory, home, nursing home and emergency room settings
  • Incorporate prevention and health promotion into all areas of patient care
  • Advocate for patients at all times

Commitment To Life-Long Learning (Practice Based Learning And Improvement):

  • Develop self-directed, life-long learning skills and attitudes
  • Integrate technology and evidence-based medicine in all aspects of the curriculum
  • Gain proficiency in the use of modern educational tools for maximizing the efficiency of lifelong learning
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to assess and improve care
  • Involve faculty in local, state and national educational forums that encourage research, presentation and publication

Collaboration And Teamwork (Interpersonal And Communication Skills):

  • Acquire proficiency in professional communication skills necessary for empathic and effective interactions with patients, families and professional associates
  • Collaborate with consultants and community resources in a manner that optimizes learning and patient care
  • Supervise, monitor, and facilitate the learning process to assure resident preparedness for future practice
  • Support assessment and feedback of faculty and residents to promote professional development

Service (Systems Based Practice):

  • Develop an awareness of and sensitivity to societal health care needs
  • Integrate the residents and faculty fully as members of professional societies
  • Capitalize on leading edge health care systems management experience at Ocean University Medical Center as a member of the Hackensack Meridian Health family
  • Provide support for local health-oriented initiatives and media
  • Understand patient care delivery with special attention to family systems and the needs of the underserved
  • Develop effective organizational skills to practice efficiently in a variety of settings

  • Practice medicine with integrity
