Brothers Carry on OB-GYN Legacy in Central New Jersey

The specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology is “all in the family” for brothers Steven A. Morgan, M.D., and Benjamin Morgan, M.D. Both practice the specialty at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Ocean University Medical Center, with offices in Ocean and Brick, New Jersey.

The Morgan family, with nine children total, has produced six doctors affiliated with Hackensack Meridian Health—all practicing in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and four of whom chose OB-GYN as their specialty. The family’s legacy began with its late patriarch, Harold C. Morgan, M.D., considered a pioneer in the OB-GYN field.

How do you describe the Morgan family connection to obstetrics and gynecology?

Dr. Benjamin Morgan: It’s kind of like growing up in a household where everyone works on cars. You tend to be interested in doing the same things. Growing up around my dad and brothers, I recall they talked about cases, surgeries and office hours. When I was in medical school, I didn’t think I would do OB-GYN, but then I did a rotation and saw the interactions with patients and families—how much they loved their doctor—and I thought that was really nice.

What do you like most about your specialty?

Dr. Steven Morgan: We are very fortunate to be a part of a lot of very important moments in a person’s life and there’s often continuity, knowing their families—mothers, sisters, cousins and even neighbors. It’s still so enjoyable and rewarding to deliver a baby and see the excitement in the parents’ eyes. I see patients, now in their 50s and 60s, whose babies I delivered earlier, who now have gynecological issues. I think, “I already know this person,” and that helps so much to know their entire history and I am sure they feel a connection too that makes them feel comfortable with their care for so many years.

What has changed most since you began practicing medicine?

Dr. Benjamin Morgan: Patients are more informed and educated, than ever before. They seem to be more interested in their care and more vested. They read a lot, including their charts and their lab work. Because they have more access to information, most have an idea about why they’re coming in, and they’ve done their own research.

How do you two work together?

Dr. Steven Morgan: When Dr. Benjamin is in one office, I’m in the other office. We communicate daily very well, and we get along very well. We’re always on the same page about patient care and about how we do things. We want every patient to have the best possible outcomes. We are also very grateful to have such a warm and welcoming staff that the patients love as well.

What do you do for fun?

Dr. Benjamin Morgan: Family time is so important, and my wife—who’s an anesthesiologist—and I take our kids to soccer. In winter, we go skiing in Vermont and New Hampshire, and in summer, it’s anything on the water, like boating and fishing for striped bass or tuna.

Dr. Steven Morgan: For my wife and I, it’s all about spending time with our three kids, who are all young adults. We all enjoy skiing and any outdoor activity. My youngest lives in Philadelphia, so recently we spontaneously all drove down for a hockey game and went “appetizer hopping” for food prior in the city. Everyone had a great time!
