Pediatric Hydrocephalus Surgery in New Jersey

Expert Pediatric Surgical Care for Hydrocephalus at Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health

Hydrocephalus is one of the most common pediatric brain disorders. Doctors can treat hydrocephalus, but babies and children with hydrocephalus often require ongoing care. Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health provides expert hydrocephalus care, from diagnosis to surgery and management.

We use a team approach to treat hydrocephalus. Our hydrocephalus team includes pediatric neurosurgeons, radiologists, and specially trained physician assistants who work together to provide the best possible care.

What is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus occurs when too much cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up in the brain or spinal cord. CSF is a liquid around the brain that provides protection and nutrients. Too much CSF can cause swelling, which can lead to brain damage if left untreated.

Hydrocephalus can begin before birth due to a genetic abnormality or certain medical conditions during pregnancy. It can also be the result of meningitis, trauma from birth, head trauma or brain tumors.

Some signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus in babies and children include:

  • Visible swelling around the surface of the skull
  • Increase in head circumference
  • Seizures
  • Extreme sleepiness
  • Headaches
  • Facial structure changes
  • Loss of coordination
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Difficulty eating
  • Delayed growth

Hydrocephalus is diagnosed based on physical exams and imaging studies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Hydrocephalus Treatment

The only way to treat hydrocephalus is through surgery. Our pediatric neurosurgeons perform:

  • Shunt surgery involves placing a long, flexible tube called a shunt in the brain. The tube redirects extra CSF fluid to another part of the body, helping lessen pressure on the brain.
  • Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) is a minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon makes a small incision in the brain. Extra CSF flows through the hole and is absorbed into the space around the brain. This procedure is primarily performed on children over the age of two.
  • Shunt revision surgery is done when an existing shunt stops working. Sometimes, shunts can malfunction as children grow. If your child’s shunt shows signs it’s not working, they may need revision surgery to repair it and ensure it works correctly.

Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health’s pediatric hydrocephalus team is available at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. Our specialists can identify hydrocephalus and perform surgery if necessary.
