Our Emergency Medicine Residency curriculum emphasizes broad-based training with increased critical care exposure. The academic year is divided into 13 four-week blocks with four weeks of vacation per year.

Community Emergency Medicine

Second year residents spend three weeks at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center to gain experience working in a community Emergency Department.

EMS

The EMS rotation serves as a fundamental introduction to all aspects of a high performance hospital-based EMS system. Residents have the opportunity to observe the 911 dispatch process and participate in field responses, including air medical with our flight team if they choose to. Residents also have the opportunity to engage pre-hospital staff in educational didactics, and gain perspective on the emergency physician’s role in the EMS system of care delivery.

Electives

Residents are allotted 6 weeks of elective time, two weeks completed during their PGY-2 year and four weeks during their PGY-3 year. Our residency established close ties with the following programs, however residents are encouraged to pursue any of their EM interests.

• St. Croix – During their PGY-3 elective block, residents can opt to spend 4 weeks on the island of St. Croix, USVI at Gov. Juan Luis Hospital’s Emergency Department. Residents are exposed to a myriad of pathology and gain a memorable training experience.
• Toxicology  – Residents are offered the opportunity to work closely with our board certified toxicology faculty at our New Jersey Poison control center. This senior elective offers residents a unique experience to learn the management of care for unique patients and the effects of toxic exposures.
• Pharmacology – Residents are provided the opportunity to work with our ED PharmD and learn more about best practices and evidence behind the medications we use as therapeutics in our daily practice. Residents who complete an elective rotation in pharmacology will be experts in addressing nuances and side-effects of commonly prescribed medications to our patients.

Other available electives include Palliative Care, Healthcare Admin/Leadership, MICU Consult Service, Sports Medicine, and Medical Education.
