For Healthcare Professionals

Message from our chair

Building a world-class department isn't a sprint; it's a long-haul journey. Right now, Emergency Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center is undergoing a genuine Renaissance. We are outgrowing our status as a well-kept regional secret to become a national powerhouse. Our goal is clear: we are building the last great Department of Emergency Medicine. In this space, we preserve the soul of our specialty through constant innovation and a simple commitment to remain the true heart of the medical center.

Our mission rests on four pillars of excellence:

  • World-Class Operations & Quality: We rank among the 10 busiest Emergency Departments in the country. Every day, we prove that massive volume and best-in-class metrics don't just coexist—they thrive together. We don't settle for "good enough"; we benchmark our outcomes daily against the nation's elite academic programs to ensure our care stays a cut above.
  • Self-Disruption & Adaptability: We push innovation far beyond the ED walls. Rather than just reacting to the future of healthcare, we disrupt our own status quo to stay ahead. We serve as the high-velocity command center for the entire health system.
  • Pioneering Research: We use our massive clinical volume to drive discovery. Our faculty transforms data into real-world, bedside interventions that define the next generation of acute care and change how the world treats the critically ill.
  • Transformative Education: In this dynamic, living laboratory, we mentor the future leaders of our field. Our faculty has grown entirely through reputation and word-of-mouth—we attract people who care deeply about the journey and the success of the colleagues standing next to them.

What really defines us is an infectious passion for the work and a culture of radical collaboration. We've moved past being "just a department." We are the vital organ that keeps this entire system moving.

We are writing the future of Emergency Medicine right here - setting a new standard for what a department can achieve when it refuses to settle.
