Resident Success & Development

At Hackensack University Medical Center, our primary goal is to foster a culture of continuous growth and ensure every resident achieves their full potential. We believe that residency is a challenging journey, and our philosophy is centered entirely on proactive support and development, not discipline.

The Resident Success Team

To operationalize this philosophy, we have established a dedicated Resident Success Team. This specialized group of faculty members is distinct from the formal evaluative Clinical Competency Committee (CCC). Their sole focus is to provide structured coaching, mentorship, and advocacy for our residents.

Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs)

We recognize that every physician learns differently. Every resident in our program is guided by an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP)—a living document designed in collaboration with faculty advisors to set goals, track clinical progress, and encourage self-assessment.

For residents who may benefit from more intensive, targeted guidance to meet specific developmental goals, the Success Team provides Coached ILPs. Whether initiated by the CCC, the Program Director, or via resident self-referral, a Coached ILP pairs the resident with a dedicated faculty ILP Coach. Together, they utilize direct observation, data review, and regular feedback meetings to provide maximum resources and oversight, ensuring the resident confidently progresses toward independent practice.
