Quality & Patient Safety
Our Emergency Medicine Residency is committed to training not just outstanding clinicians, but future leaders in healthcare quality and administration. Our longitudinal Quality and Patient Safety (QPS) curriculum ensures every resident develops a deep, practical understanding of systems-based practice and how it directly impacts patient outcomes.
Targeted Quality Groups & Case Reviews
To provide focused, high-yield QA/QI experience and satisfy ACGME requirements, each resident is assigned to one of our specialized Quality Groups, led by a dedicated faculty mentor. Groups are focused on analyzing critical ED indicators, including:
- Adult 72-Hour Returns
- Pediatric 72-Hour Returns
- ED Mortality
- Case Review Committee
- ED Observation
- Intubations & Airway
- Procedures
- Toxicology
- STEMI
Residents take true ownership of the quality review process. Each month, group members review curated cases, evaluate clinical documentation, and identify systems-level opportunities to improve patient care delivery, efficiency, and safety within the department.
Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) Leadership
To build public speaking and analytical skills, every resident will have the opportunity to lead a departmental Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference. Under the dedicated guidance of a faculty mentor, residents learn how to deconstruct complex cases in a blame-free environment to identify cognitive biases and system vulnerabilities.
Proactive Systems Improvement
Through specialized didactics, residents learn the foundational principles of QI science. We emphasize proactive systems improvement through highly interactive Mock Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and encourage active resident participation in the departmental Case Review Committee.
