Scholarship

We believe that generating generalizable medical knowledge is a vital component of academic emergency medicine. To foster critical thinking, collaboration, and academic growth, HUMC features a highly structured, three-year research curriculum that guides residents from initial concept to national presentation.

The "Pitch & Vote" Model

Every spring, each PGY-1 resident proposes a unique research idea, presenting its clinical significance and feasibility to the entire residency class. In a highly collaborative process, the residency body votes to select the top four projects. Residents are then assigned to project teams based on their specific clinical and academic preferences.

Unparalleled Support

What truly sets our research curriculum apart from other training programs is our dedicated, in-house Biomedical Informatics Team. We recognize that navigating the logistics of clinical research can be daunting during residency. To ensure our residents succeed, this group of experts serves as a comprehensive support system, meticulously shepherding residents through each phase of the research lifecycle.

Rather than leaving residents to figure out the administrative hurdles on their own, our informatics team provides hands-on guidance with:

  • Study conception and methodological design
  • Navigating and submitting IRB proposals
  • Data extraction and collection
  • Complex statistical analysis
  • Abstract and manuscript authorship and formal submission

Advanced HMH Resident/Fellow Research Track

For trainees with a strong desire to pursue academic medicine, the institution additionally offers the prestigious Hackensack Meridian Health Resident/Fellow Research Track. This structured, 18–24 month longitudinal program is designed to cultivate independent research skills and position residents for highly competitive fellowships, academic faculty careers, and K-series career development awards. Participants receive advanced mentorship and complete a specialized curriculum aimed at producing high-impact projects with potential for future grant funding. Graduates of the program earn the distinguished title of HMH Resident/Fellow Research Scholar, along with a formal certificate of completion and dedicated institutional funding to support publication costs and conference presentations.

National Presentations & Publication

Supported by our Informatics Team and advanced research pathways, our residents routinely contribute to the national conversation in Emergency Medicine. Each of our research teams submit at least one abstract to the national ACEP Research Forum and present their ongoing progress annually at the HUMC EM Research Day. We actively support manuscript development for peer-reviewed publication, ensuring our residents graduate with highly competitive academic CVs.
