NJ Primary Care Doctor Leaves His Door Open as a ‘Leader’ for His Patients

Standing outdoors, family medicine specialist Kevin Vasquez, M.D., smiles at the camera with greenery behind him.

A child of two immigrants who didn’t speak English, family medicine specialist Kevin Vasquez, M.D., knows the power of seeing a physician who looks and speaks like your family.

“When I accompanied my parents to the doctor, a lot was lost in translation, and there was an unspoken cultural limitation to those visits,” says Dr. Vasquez. This influenced his decision to become a doctor. Now, as he practices at Hackensack Meridian Primary Care—From Road in Paramus, he estimates that he speaks Spanish with 80% of his patients.

“When I decided to become a doctor, I knew I wanted to be a physician with integrity and compassion for all my patients,” he says. “Family medicine has given me the best option to do that—be a ‘leader’ for patients, have time to sit with them and explain what’s going on so they can take charge of their health. I leave my door open for them.”

How do you decompress after a long workday?

I’ve been running since high school when I did cross country and distance running. It’s a great way to stay healthy and reduce stress. I like to play my favorite music. It “resets” me and keeps me focused and energized.

What else do you do for fun and relaxation?

I enjoy exploring video games that tell a story and provide different perspectives on life. I’m a huge book guy, and I try to read one a month, whether it be fiction, historical or self-help. I’m reading one on depression, a condition I see often in my patients. I hope to use what I learn in my practice because I believe the mind, body and spirit are all connected.

Who is your hero?

My mother, Dinora Garcia, who also lives in New Jersey, persevered through all our family's challenges and raised us three children. Her actions, dedication, and perseverance taught me not to squander opportunities.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

I’d be a hawk for the incredible freedom to experience flight and go wherever I want. I’m a proud father of three parakeets: Taco, Tiki and Tapas.
