New Pediatric COVID-19 Recovery Center Treats Lingering Post-COVID Symptoms

Center brings together multiple specialists in a single visit

Pediatric Covid Recovery

Pediatric Rheumatology Associate Director and Attending, Jennifer E. Weiss, M.D., and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and Pediatric Hospitalist, Katharine Clouser, M.D., at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center have led the establishment of a Pediatric COVID-19 Recovery Center to treat children, adolescents and young adults through 21 years of age for lingering, persistent post-COVID symptoms.

The Pediatric COVID-19 Recovery Center is located on the campus of the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. The center joins the adult COVID-19 Recovery Center which was the first center of its kind to open in New Jersey.

New Jersey has been one of the states hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hackensack Meridian Health network of hospitals has treated thousands of these patients, more than any other health system in New Jersey, and many COVID-19 patients, children included, continue to face lingering side effects requiring continued care.

The specialists treat lingering, persistent post-COVID symptoms including:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Brain fog
  • Muscle and joint pain

Children are seen at the outpatient Pediatric Center at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

To address the wide range of symptoms that some children experience after acute COVID-19 infection, the Recovery Center brings together multiple pediatric specialists in a single visit to evaluate a child experiencing what is often referred to as “Long COVID.” Children are seen by specialists who can treat their specific symptoms as identified in a pre-visit symptom questionnaire and during their first examination. These pediatric specialists include:

  • General pediatricians
  • Cardiologists
  • Neurologists
  • Pulmonologists
  • Rehabilitation specialists
  • Rheumatologists

Social Work and Child Life services are also available to support the mental health needs of each child and family.
