Pediatric Vascular Anomalies

Expert care for your child’s vascular malformation

Vascular anomalies, including birthmarks, hemangiomas and other rare conditions, can be hard to diagnose and treat. Families often face a long journey from one specialist to another without clear answers or a coordinated plan. At Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health, we simplify that journey through two expert-led programs designed to provide personalized, multidisciplinary care:

  • The Megan Schulman Vascular Anomalies Clinic at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital: The only specialized vascular anomalies program in Monmouth County, created with a generous donation from the Megan Schulman Memorial Foundation.
  • The Vascular Birthmark Center at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, a multidisciplinary program that has provided pediatric care in vascular anomalies for over 20 years.

Both centers offer similar comprehensive services at our two children’s hospitals, making it easier for families throughout New Jersey to access expert pediatric care for vascular anomalies without needing to travel far.

Vascular Anomalies We Treat

Vascular anomalies are conditions involving abnormal blood vessel growth and development. These can appear anywhere on the body, making diagnosis and treatment complex. This clinic provides expert evaluation and treatment for:

  • Infantile hemangiomas: Often called "strawberry birthmarks," these common vascular tumors can grow rapidly and sometimes require medical intervention.
  • Port-wine stains and other capillary malformations: Flat, red or purple birthmarks that may darken over time and often benefit from laser therapy.
  • Venous and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs): Abnormal blood vessel development that can impact circulation and may require surgery or medical therapy.
  • Lymphatic malformations (previously called lymphangiomas): Abnormal growths in the lymphatic system can cause swelling and require specialized care.
  • Mixed malformations, common (spider angiomas, pyogenic granulomas)and rare vascular tumors (Kaposiform hemangioendotheliomas, Tufted angiomas): Including syndromes related to vascular anomalies that may require systemic treatment or genetic evaluation.
  • Prenatal or congenital vascular anomalies: Detected before or at birth, often requiring early intervention and multidisciplinary care.

No matter the diagnosis, each case is unique, and our team works closely with every family to determine the best course of treatment.

Comprehensive Services for Your Child’s Vascular Malformation

Both clinics take a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, tailored to each child’s condition and family’s needs. Services include:

Your child benefits from coordinated, team-based care that may include collaboration with these specialties, depending on your child’s diagnosis and treatment plan: pediatric dermatology, hematology/oncology, genetics, radiology, pediatric general surgeryplastic surgery, ENT, cardiology, pathology, orthopedic care, neurosurgery, craniofacial, ophthalmology and physical/occupational therapy.
The Vascular Birthmark Center in Hackensack offers in-office laser therapy for conditions like hemangiomas and port-wine stains using gold-standard pulsed dye laser technology. More complex laser treatments can be performed under anesthesia when needed.
The clinics can provide a full range of medical therapies for vascular anomalies, including topical timolol and oral propranolol. For more complex cases, treatments may include sirolimus or alpelisib, systemic medications used in collaboration with hematology/oncology.
The clinics use state-of-the-art pediatric radiology which helps ensure an accurate assessment of vascular anomalies. Both programs provide in-office monitoring for initiating beta blockers and, when appropriate, inpatient monitoring for infants requiring extra support due to age or conditions that are more complicated.
If a vascular anomaly is detected before birth, our pediatric specialists work closely with maternal-fetal medicine experts to develop a care plan before and after delivery.
Whenever possible, we offer non-surgical options such as topical and oral medications like timolol and propranolol to reduce the size and impact of vascular anomalies.
When surgery is needed, our general surgeons, dermatologists, and ENT and plastic surgeons will tailor an approach to achieve the best outcomes and minimal discomfort, including consideration of the latest techniques, such as laser therapy and minimally invasive procedures.
Families get one-on-one guidance from the care team or a nurse navigator who helps coordinate appointments, secure medications and ensure a smooth healthcare journey.
Some conditions require careful long-term observation to ensure optimal outcomes for your child. We’re here for you from start to finish, no matter how long that takes.
