Mammography and Breast Imaging

Women ages 40 and above: Should start annual screening mammography and continue if healthy and with a life expectancy of 10 years.

• Have a family history of breast cancer
• Have dense breast tissue
• Carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 (or any of the additional known 9 gene mutations)
• Had prior chest radiation at a young age (most often due to Hodgkin's Disease)
• Have a personal history of breast cancer or other high-risk conditions
  
   

If you feel a lump, experience nipple discharge, notice changes in breast shape or skin texture, or have pain that doesn’t go away, talk to your doctor right away, even if you’re not due for a routine mammogram.

• Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.
• Avoid using deodorant, powders, or lotions on your chest or underarms, as they may affect the imaging results.
• Bring your ID and insurance card.

• A licensed, experienced technologist will guide you through the process and answer any questions.
• You’ll stand in front of the mammography machine while each breast is gently compressed for a few seconds to capture clear, high-resolution images.
• The entire exam usually takes about 15 minutes.

• You can return to your normal activities immediately.
• A board-certified radiologist will review your images and your results will be shared with you and your physician, typically within a few days.
• If additional imaging is needed, we’ll contact you to schedule follow-up tests.
