What are signs of hearing loss in babies and young children?

Hearing loss in children can be hard to detect, especially in infants. Some early signs may include not startling at loud noises, not turning toward sounds, or delays in speech and language development. As your child grows, you might notice them asking “what?” often, turning up the volume on devices, or seeming to ignore when spoken to. If you’re ever unsure, a hearing screening is a safe and easy first step.

What happens during a pediatric hearing evaluation?

A pediatric hearing evaluation is tailored to your child’s age and developmental level. For infants, it may include tests like Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) or otoacoustic emissions, which don’t require a response from your child. For toddlers and older children, we use interactive or play-based hearing tests in a calm, kid-friendly environment. Our goal is to make the experience as stress-free and accurate as possible.

Does my child need a hearing aid or cochlear implant?

Not all children with hearing loss need a device, but if they do, we’ll guide you through every step. Hearing aids can help with many types of hearing loss, and cochlear implants may be recommended for children with severe to profound hearing loss. Will my child need follow-up after a newborn hearing screening?

If your baby didn’t pass their initial newborn hearing screening, it’s important to follow up with a full diagnostic evaluation as soon as possible.
