Purpose

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Description

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is an ASHP-accredited program with 4 PGY1 residency positions. Residents are mentored by preceptors who are committed to patient care and the training of new practitioners.

The program provides a structured and advanced education and training experience to prepare graduates to successfully practice in various patient care positions, faculty appointments, or further post-doctoral pharmacy training. The pharmacy residents are an integral part of interdisciplinary teams, hospital committees, community outreach programs and medication safety initiatives.

A variety of core and elective learning experiences are available based on the hospital’s many specialties. Rotation scheduling is flexible and designed to complement the residents' areas of interest. Additionally, residents have the opportunity to gain further insight into a specialty area through the completion of an original quality improvement/research project of their choice. Journal clubs, seminars, clinical controversies, inservices and lectures are presented to a variety of audiences. Written and oral communication skills are emphasized with a focus on evidence-based medicine.

This program participates in the National Matching Service. This residency site agrees that no person at this site will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any residency applicant.

Program Director Message

Welcome to the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center! I am very proud of the program that we have created and the success of our graduates and hope you enjoy learning more about us.

Our program has 10 years of experience in training and preparing our residents for the next step of their careers. Prior residents have moved on to accept a wide variety of PGY2 residencies, fellowships, clinical and unit-based pharmacist positions as well as faculty positions.

Our residency program has tremendous support from hospital administration which assists in the continual growth and advancement of our program. I feel that having 4 PGY1 pharmacy residency positions has proven to be an ideal number for us. It allows our residents to collaborate and work on group projects while also maintaining one-on-one education in each learning experience. Our dedicated preceptors are vested in the success of our residents and every resident has a mentor to provide guidance throughout the year.

The learning environment within our large academic medical center offers the opportunity to train alongside the various learners of multiple disciplines including students, residents, and fellows. The pharmacy residents are an integral part of these interdisciplinary teams.

We are focused on a positive work-life balance and make efforts to enjoy time together outside of work with various gatherings, team-building events, holiday parties, and graduation celebrations. Resident wellness activities and employee assistance programs provided by our institution strive to keep our residents healthy in all aspects of their lives. Our staffing model includes only 1 weekend per month to further contribute to a positive work-life balance. Evening weekday staffing hours are utilized to ensure a complete learning experience for our residents.

It also can’t go unmentioned that the area surrounding our hospital is a beautiful place to live and work, located only 1 mile to the beach and beach towns with many restaurants and shops. We are also in close proximity to both New York and Philadelphia.
