From Hackensack to Ecuador: Pediatric Urology Director Joins Mission to Heal Children

Program resumes treating pediatric patients overseas

Pediatric Urology Chief

Richard Schlussel, M.D., director of pediatric urology for the Hackensack Meridian Health network, represented Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital as the Trip Chief of a 30-member team of health care providers who traveled to South America to treat and operate on more than 40 children at the Hospital de Roberto Gilbert in Ecuador. After two and half years of the program being put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Schussel is glad that the program is back up and running.

"As the trip's chief-in-charge of our 30-person team, I can tell you it was exhausting but extremely rewarding," says Dr. Schlussel. "The mission was quite successful and I am grateful to the team. We operated on approximately 40 children with all manner of complex congenital pediatric urology conditions. We performed many involved reconstructions and our patients very much appreciated their care."

The mission was sponsored by Healing the Children New Jersey. Healing the Children New Jersey (HTCNJ) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1981 with the vision to create a world where every child has access to quality medical care.
