Hackensack University Medical Center Elder Life Program (HELP)
Evidence-based Program Improves All-around Geriatric Care
As part of our commitment to provide optimal care for geriatric patients, Hackensack University Medical Center offers an evidence-based program called the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). The goal is to improve the hospital experience of older adults by preventing the onset of delirium, a very common syndrome among seniors.
We implement a team approach with an elder life specialist, elder life nurse, a geriatrician and a large number of carefully trained volunteers. One or more members of this team make daily visits designed to keep the patient fully oriented and help them maintain their cognitive and functional status—while at the hospital and following discharge.
Volunteers provide patients with therapeutic activities, exercise, and assistance with meals, as well as provide companionship when necessary.
